Meiotic chromosomes and nucleolar behavior in testicular cells of the grassland spittlebugs Deois flavopicta, Mahanarva fimbriolata and Notozulia entreriana (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Castanhole,Márcia Maria Urbanin; Pereira,Luis Lênin Vicente; Souza,Hederson Vinicius de; Valério,José Raul; Barbosa,Leonardo Rodrigues; Itoyama,Mary Massumi.
Spittlebugs annually infest pastures and cause severe damage, representing a serious problem for the tropical American beef cattle industry. Spittlebugs are an important biotic constraint to forage production and there is a lack of cytogenetic data for this group of insects. For these reasons, we conducted this work, in which the spermatogenesis and nucleolar behavior of Deois flavopicta, Mahanarva fimbriolata and Notozulia entreriana were studied. The males possessed testes in the shape of a "bunch of grapes"; a variable number of testicular lobes per individual and polyploid nuclei composed of several heteropycnotic bodies. A heteropycnotic area was located in the periphery of the nucleus (prophase I); the chiasmata were terminal or interstitial;...

Microsatellite diversity and chromosome number in natural populations of Trifolium riograndense Burkart Scientia Agricola
Conterato,Ionara Fatima; Dall'Agnol,Miguel; Schifino-Wittmann,Maria Teresa; Janke,Aline.
Twenty eight natural populations of Trifolium riograndense Burkart, an important forage legume from native pastures of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were evaluated for genetic diversity with eight Simple Sequences Repeats (SSR) markers. Chromosome numbers were also determined. The eight markers were polymorphic, with 35 alleles and an average of 4.37 alleles per locus, and Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) between 0.48 and 0.80. Group analysis based on Jaccard´s similarity coefficient separated the 28 accessions in nine groups, with an average genetic similarity of 0.44, indicating a high genetic variability among the populations. No evident relation between genetic distance and geographical origin was detected. The chromosome number of...

Microsatellite instability and cytogenetic survey in myeloid leukemias BJMBR
Ribeiro,E.M.S.F.; Rodriguez,J.M.; Cóser,V.M.; Sotero,M.G.; Fonseca Neto,J.M.; Pasquini,R.; Cavalli,I.J..
Microsatellites are short tandem repeat sequences dispersed throughout the genome. Their instability at multiple genetic loci may result from mismatch repair errors and it occurs in hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. This instability is also found in many sporadic cancers. In order to evaluate the importance of this process in myeloid leukemias, we studied five loci in different chromosomes of 43 patients, 22 with chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) in the chronic phase, 7 with CML in blast crisis, and 14 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), by comparing leukemic DNA extracted from bone marrow and constitutional DNA obtained from buccal epithelial cells. Only one of the 43 patients (2.1%), with relapsed AML, showed an alteration in the allele length at...

Morphological characterization, cytogenetic analysis, and geographical distribution of the Pygmy Marbled Newt Triturus marmoratus pygmaeus (Wolterstorff, 1905) (Caudata: Salamandridae) Naturalis
García-París, M.; Herrero, P.; Martín, C.; Dorda, J.; Esteban, M.; Arano, B..
Triturus marmoratus pygmaeus, a problematic subspecies of the Marbled Newt from the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, is redescribed using specimens collected in the “typical” area. Diagnostic external morphological features are provided to permit the accurate determination of the specimens belonging either to T. m. marmoratus or to T. m. pygmaeus. These diagnostic features were applied to individuals both from the field and from museum collections. The results indicate a larger distributional area for T. m. pygmaeus than was previously recognized. The distribution of T. m. marmoratus ranges over the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula and most of France; T. m. pygmaeus occupies the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The contact area...

Morphological characters and karyology of Miogryllus piracicabensis Piza (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) Neotropical Entomology
Mesa,Alejo; García-Novo,Paula; Roat,Thaisa; Portugal,Cauré.
The genus Miogryllus includes a considerable number of species, most of them still undescribed. From those already described, the amount of afforded details on morphology is not always enough to recognize the species, missing information on phallic and pars stridens structures as well as karyology. The present paper aims to improve these information, on the species M. piracicabensis.

Neoplasia detection in Macoma balthica from the Gulf of Gdansk: comparison of flow cytometry, histology and chromosome analysis ArchiMer
Smolarz, Kasia; Renault, Tristan; Soletchnik, Patrick; Wolowicz, Macciek.
A flow cytometry protocol was applied for the detection of neoplasia in Macoma balthica L. from the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea, Poland). A simple method, based on an osmotic shock, was used to permeabilise gill cells. The cytometric pattern of normal clams consisted of 2 peaks, a major peak B and a smaller peak C. The cytometric pattern of affected clams consisted of 2 peaks named B' and C'. Two parameters were used to define the stages of abnormalities in M. balthica clams based on the percentage of cells in peaks B, C, B' and C' and on the ratio between the fluorescence value of peaks B, C, B' and C' in all individuals. Three stages of neoplasia were clearly distinguished by flow cytometry considering peak C'. Stage 1 was characterised by a major...

New contributions to the study of Corixoidea: cytogenetic characterization of three species of Sigara from Argentina and the plausible mechanisms of karyotype evolution within Nepomorpha Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Bressa,María José; Papeschi,Alba Graciela.
Cytogenetic studies in Heteroptera contribute to the analysis of evolutionary trends within the group. Heteroptera are characterized by the possession of holokinetic chromosomes, different sex chromosome mechanisms and a pair of m chromosomes in some species. In the present work, the male karyotype and meiosis in Sigara denseconscripta (Breddin), S. chrostowskii Jaczewski, and S. rubyae (Hungerford) are described. The three species share a diploid chromosome number of 2n= 24 with a pair of m chromosomes and an XY/XX sex chromosome system. With this study the chromosome number of 30 species of Corixoidea are known and the modal karyotype is 2n= 20+2m+XY in males. The available cytogenetic information in Heteroptera led us to suggest that the presence of a...

Nine karyomorphs for spiny rats of the genus Proechimys (Echimyidae, Rodentia) from North and Central Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Machado,Taís; Silva,Maria José de J.; Leal-Mesquita,Emygdia Rosa; Carmignotto,Ana Paula; Yonenaga-Yassuda,Yatiyo.
Spiny rats of the genus Proechimys are morphologically diverse, widely distributed and have diploid numbers ranging from 2n = 14-16 to 2n = 62. In this paper we present cytogenetical data and brief comments on morphological and biogeographical issues related to spiny rats. In our sample of 42 spiny rats collected from 12 Brazilian Amazonian tropical rainforest and the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) sites we detected nine karyological entities: four different karyomorphs with 2n = 30, three with 2n = 28, one with 2n = 15 and one with 2n = 44. Based on qualitative morphological characters these karyomorphs can be allocated to five species within the goeldii, guyannensis and longicaudatus species groups.

Nuclear DNA content and chromosome number in Brachiaria spp. genotypes Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Timbó,Ana Luiza de Oliveira; Pereira,Roselaine Cristina; Souza Sobrinho,Fausto; Davide,Lisete Chamma.
Breeding programs for Brachiaria spp. use both intraspecies and interspecies crosses between sexual and apomictic plants in order to obtain new cultivars with the desired characteristics. As there are different ploidy levels both within and between species of this genus, it becomes necessary to evaluate the genotypes used in breeding programs, as a guide to breeders when adopting crossing strategies. In this work, DNA content and chromosome number were determined in order to characterise ploidy levels in Brachiaria spp. genotypes. In the analysis of 15 genotypes, DNA content varied with the ploidy levels (2x, 3x and 4x), and between species and/or taxon. The average DNA content was 1.74 pg (2x) in B. ruziziensis, 3.74 pg (4x) in B. decumbens and 3.52 pg...

Nucleolar organizer regions in Sittasomus griseicapillus and Lepidocolaptes angustirostris (Aves, Dendrocolaptidae): evidence of a chromosome inversion Genet. Mol. Biol.
Barbosa,Marcelo de Oliveira; Silva,Rubens Rodrigues da; Correia,Vanessa Carolina de Sena; Santos,Luana Pereira dos; Garnero,Analía del Valle; Gunski,Ricardo José.
Cytogenetic studies in birds are still scarce compared to other vertebrates. Woodcreepers (Dendrocolaptidae) are part of a highly specialized group within the Suboscines of the New World. They are forest birds exclusive to the Neotropical region and similar to woodpeckers, at a comparable evolutionary stage. This paper describes for the first time the karyotypes of the Olivaceous and the Narrow-billed Woodcreeper using conventional staining with Giemsa and silver nitrate staining of the nucleolar organizer regions (Ag-NORs). Metaphases were obtained by fibular bone marrow culture. The chromosome number of the Olivaceous Woodcreeper was 2n = 82 and of the Narrow-billed Woodcreeper, 2n = 82. Ag-NORs in the largest macrochromosome pair and evidence of a...

Polymorphism of Sooty-fronted Spinetail (Synallaxis frontalis Aves: Furnariidae): Evidence of chromosomal rearrangements by pericentric inversion in autosomal macrochromosomes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Souza,Marcelo Santos de; Barcellos,Suziane Alves; Costa,Alice Lemos; Kretschmer,Rafael; Garnero,Analía Del Valle; Gunski,Ricardo José.
Abstract The Passeriformes is the most diverse and cytogenetically well-known clade of birds, comprising approximately 5,000 species. The sooty-fronted spinetail (Synallaxis frontalis Aves: Furnariidae) species, which belongs to the order Passeriformes, is typically found in South America, where it is widely distributed. Polymorphisms provide genetic variability, important for several evolutionary processes, including speciation and adaptation to the environment. The aim of this work was to analyze the possible cytotypes and systemic events involved in the species polymorphism. Of the sampled 19 individuals, two thirds were polymorphic, an event supposedly linked to mutations resulting from genomic evolution that can be transmitted hereditarily. A...

We investigated the NOR distribution in ten populations of Physalaemus cuvieri from different regions of Brazil and Argentina. A high variability in NOR pattern was observed and provided a useful tool in grouping several populations. The specimens from the state of Tocantins, northern Brazil, could easily be distinguished from all the other analyzed populations, since its karyotype presented NORs in the chromosome pairs 1,3,4 and 10 (and sometimes also in chromosome 5), and several pericentromeric C-bands. A NOR-site in chromosome 9 characterized three populations from the northeastern region of Brazil. Interestingly, the P. cuvieri populations located in opposite extremes of the geographic distribution had, as a fixed condition, the presence of NORs in 8q...

Parodontidae fish show few morphological characteristics for the identification of their representatives and chromosomal analyses have provided reliable features for determining the interrelationships in this family. In this study, the chromosomes of Apareiodon hasemani from the São Francisco River basin, Brazil, were analyzed and showed a karyotype with 2n = 54 meta/submetacentric chromosomes, and a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system. The study revealed active NORs located on pair 11 and additional 18S rDNA sites on pairs 7 and 22. The 5S rDNA locus was found in pair 14. It showed a pericentric inversion regarding the ancestral condition. The satellite DNA pPh2004 was absent in the chromosomes of A. hasemani, a shared condition with most members of Apareiodon....
